Local Time and Date

Local time and date in Johannesburg.
Although South Africa is in the same time zone as Central Africa Time or CAT, the country’s local time zone, which is used by all of South Africa, as well as Swaziland and Lesotho, is referred to as South Africa Standard Time or SAST

The SAST zone is two hours ahead of UTC (UTC+2) and GMT (GMT+2), and is the same as Eastern European Time.

No daylight saving is observed.

Those countries in Africa with the same time, from north to south, are Egypt, Eastern part of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Malawi, Mocambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho

South Africa’s noon reference is taken from the 30deg east line of longitude, with Johannesburg being slightly west at 28 deg east.

Interestingly, when all time on Earth was read from a sundial, every city had its own time – dependant on the sun’s noon point for that sundial!
