A 3000km CYCLE RIDE TO LAUNCH A NEW CONSERVATION PROJECT FOR AFRICA’S SMALLEST FINCH

Join Eelco Meyjes on his amazing adventure of a 3000km CYCLE RIDE TO LAUNCH A NEW CONSERVATION PROJECT FOR AFRICA’S SMALLEST FINCH.

In March 2015, Eelco cycled from Cape Town to Vic Falls in Zimbabwe.

BirdLife South Africa and the Rare Finch Conservation Group www.rarefinch.org are collaborating on a new conservation project to try and establish why the little Orange-breasted Waxbill (Amandava subflava), Africa’s smallest finch, is disappearing in certain parts of the species’ natural habitat.

The species is a wetland and grassland bird.

Unexpected declines in certain parts of its natural habitat has resulted in the need for the species to be researched.

'HIKING THE MAJESTIC FJORDS OF NORWAY'
by Sarah Whitehead

After exploring the picturesque harbour town of Bergen and being horrified by the prices of bottled water in the Norwegian grocery stores, Sarah and her husband Warren travelled north to a guest farm house located on the edge of Sognefjord in Northern Norway.

This was their base to hike the majestic Fjord region, which included trekking and climbing highlights such as the Valley of the Waterfalls and the Jostedal Glacier, the largest glacier on mainland Europe

'TREKKING THE PEAKS OF THE BALKANS – ALBANIA, KOSOVO AND MONTENEGRO'
by Rob Millar and Gisela Stegmann - on behalf of a group of JHC Wednesday hikers!

Several JHC Wednesday hikers experienced a rugged, rustic and awesome 9-day journey in the Accursed Mountains of Albania and Montenegro on the Peaks of the Balkans Trail.

This trek included an amazing diversity of experiences from a scenic 3 hour fjord ferry trip, through wild and mysterious forests, over majestic and imposing mountains, overnighting in a mixture of primitive shepherd huts, isolated centuries old farmsteads and splendid luxury hotels.

Our advice to anyone interested, share in our adventure through our slide show and get there before McDonalds and convoys of tour buses discover it.

You won't be sorry!

'A LONG WALK IN THE HINDU KUSH (PAKISTAN),
ALONG THE AFGHAN BORDER'
by Hans Broetz.

In the heart of the South Asian sub-continent is a country with its own fascinating history and cultural heritage.

It was the site for one of the world's earliest human settlements, the great prehistoric Indus Valley Civilization.

Its history traces back to 2,500 years B.C.

Hans spent 19 days hiking in the northern areas of Pakistan: wading through icy cold glacier rivers, plodding over derelict wooden bridges and trekking up the mountains for magnificent views of the towering snow-clad peaks and then down into the Gilgit, Hunza and Skardu valleys.

AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2015
THE GREATEST AVIATION ADVENTURE IN THE WORLD

Be prepared for an exciting presentation as Athol Franz says "the audience will be gobsmacked by the visuals".

After walking in excess of 100km over the seven days of the show, lugging heavy cameras and lenses, the result was tired feet but amazing photographs.

This Oshkosh Airshow attracts more than 750,000 people, 10,000 aircraft of all sizes - from the smallest microlight types to airliners and military jets, and everything in between.

We camped in tents together with 35,000 campers, mostly in large American Recreation Vehicles (RVs).

This was Athol’s 15th tour in a row to Oshkosh.

There were some incredible aircraft: Airbus A350 XWB, US Air Force B52 bomber, USAF F22 Raptor, USAF F35 joint strike fighter – the very latest. .

Parkview Junior School Garden Fun Day

PVJ is a government school.

Out of the 314 students that attend the school, 41 of the grade 1 to 3 students are fully sponsored and 9 partially sponsored (that’s 16% of our pupils).

Thanks to the support of the community, parent involvement and a dedicated teaching and management staff, PVJ is regarded as one of the top government schools in our country.

As a part of our strategy to successfully fulfil our goals in 2015, we are currently preparing our 2nd Garden Day to be hosted by our school on the 19th of September 2015.

This function will be open not only to families in the school, but also to the broader Parkview and surrounding Community, an annual event not to be missed in the Parkview Community Calendar.

We have estimated that 1200 people came through out gates last year and we hope to attract more than 1800 feet this year.

The event is set to run from 10am to 3pm.

The PVJ Garden Fun Day will be a wholesome, fun-filled family day that includes:
* A range of environmentally friendly garden crafts and activities for children of all ages;
* Archery, a climbing wall, and rocket;
* A variety of plants for sale at competitive prices; including seedlings, indigenous species and rare plants;
* A panel of garden experts to guide our customers as they make their purchases; as well as a talks on "Plant Propagation" and "Owls and Bats in Suburban Gardens".
* A garden market;
* School showcases and art displays;
* A range of delicious home made American, Asian and South African foods for the whole family.
* Prizes and giveaways;
* A child zone, garden zone, quiet zone and entertainment zone with entertainment throughout the day.
We are very lucky to have V'eronique Lalouette as our headline performer as well as a Big Band featuring the Joburg Youth Jazz Ensemble.

One Man Mentalist – One Island by Michael Abrahamson

"One Man Mentalist – One Island" by Michael Abrahamson.

When Michael Abrahamson last took to the stage in Johannesburg, Genevieve Vieira from The Citizen called him …utterly baffling and completely extraordinary", Lesley Stones from Artslink thought he was "impressive and intriguing" and Moira de Swardt from Artscomments was "genuinely amazed and thrilled".

Now this amazing mathematician and "baffler of brains" is back with a brand new show, One Man Mentalist – One Island, at the Cresta Barnyard for one show only on Sunday the 23rd August at 19h00.

It's a mesmerizing show designed to both fascinate & entertain.

Michael is great at interacting with the audience and exchanging witty banter with volunteers seeking their five minutes of fame, and in this show he again somehow predicts the audience member actions by using a combination of maths, memory, and his unique ability to read both minds and body language.

Teaming up for the second time with director Richard H Nosworthy, together they have devised an engaging and highly entertaining evening of family entertainment.

Expect no smoke and mirrors, no rabbits stuffed into hats and there will definitely be no members of the audience placed & primed to play along.
But you will meet one man marooned on a stage – erh... sorry "desert island" - using his five senses to create a sixth, and you’ll be a witness to one man pushing mentalism to a new level.

"Aye Aye Adventure and more tails in Madagascar" by Jo Meintje.

Most people think that there is a spelling mistake with 'tails' – it should be tales or trails BUT (as you will see from the attachment) the show is about tracking down, on foot, the elusive Aye Aye and other unusual animals in Madagascar – which sounds intriguing and exciting.

Jo will be bringing a few copies of her late husband's book entitled "The Borneo Headhunters Cuckoo Clock" by Chris Meintjes and requests a R10 donation to the JHC.

The book highlights travails in travel ie where not to sleep, what food one should not eat etc., sooooo get there early and be one of the first 20 participants.

"Forget about the rhino for a moment and spare a thought for the lions.
When the rhino poaching problem subsides in five to 10 years, wild lions will be gone.
The continent's lion population has shrunk by 75 percent in the past two decades, according to wildlife experts.
They are currently "vulnerable" on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's list of threatened species.
In west and central Africa lions are classified as "endangered".

"The facts are these lions are declining at such a pace. We will have nothing left in a few years" conservation group Walking for Lions (WFL) founder Marcus Roodbol says.

February

The Heart Express

Date : Saturday 14th February 2015
Time : 08h30 – 17h30 (8.30am - 5.30pm)
Where : We start at Friends of the Rail in Pretoria (152 Miechaelson Street), travel through to Cullinan and then return later that afternoon

The-Heart-Express

The Heart Express

The Hudson Initiative (THI), named after blue-eyed angel Hudson Slater-Smith, who succumbed to a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) when he was a mere 4 months old, is taking over 120 families to Cullinan on "The Heart Express", our first (and hopefully annual) family fun day.

The day is aimed at young and old alike, with the goal of creating awareness and furthering education around CHD; moreover, it's a wonderful opportunity for families to build memories that will last a lifetime.

Tickets cost R250 for adults and R100 per child; as this is not a fundraising exercise, these costs cover the basic cost of the train hire but will include fun activities for the kids on the train like the reading of a Congenital Heart Defects Awareness book, face painting, clowns, a jumping castle and music.

When we reach Cullinan, we will have more fun stuff for the kids to do and we’ll be keeping you updated around activities as and when they are secured.

The cost of the ticket does not include food; you are most welcome to pack a picnic basket or purchase food at Cullinan, which boasts a range of outlets that serve delicious eats and drinks.
We are finalising the details of the trip but for right now, we’ll be heading out to the train station in Pretoria very early on Saturday, 14 February 2015, boarding the train for a +-2.5 hour journey to Cullinan, spending a few hours in the town and then heading back.

You can find out more about Hudson by visiting his web page, which is full of FAQs and information, liking his Facebook page or following us on Twitter.
We have also included a synopsis below for easy reading.

We also invite you to view our CHD Awareness Video for 2014 CHD Awareness Month (February).
We will be releasing our 2015 video during CHD Awareness Week (7-14 February2015).

We’d love to hear back from you; we need you, it’s as simple as that – without you, we cannot achieve our goals in raising awareness among current and potential moms and dads.

Please say you’ll come.

The Hudson Initiative Team!

The Hudson Initiative aims to raise awareness amongst parents (both prospective and current) around the reality that is Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs).

Every year on CHD Awareness Day (14 February), the THI team hosts a massive event in an effort to raise awareness and get people talking about it and for 2015 they’re looking at families – all kinds.
They’re going to be creating The Heart Express, squishing a bunch of people onto a train and taking them out to Cullinan for the day.
On the train, kids will learn all about CHDs through the reading of an education kiddies book that is going to be conceptualised and designed by the team and the day promises to be full to the brim with exciting activities for both the children and their parents.

This is not a fundraiser; the cost of the tickets is just that, the cost of the tickets!

All food and beverages will be to your own cost – there will be food and drink available on the train as well as at Cullinan when we land. All the entertainment being provided on the day is being donated!

The ABSA Joburg City Festival

Date : Thursday 2nd - Sunday 5th October 2014
Venue : Various venues (see link to festival website below)

The ABSA Joburg City Festival
South Africans are invited to rediscover Jozi and at the same time, dip into its history, its people and the very essence that makes it one of Africa’s most vibrant urban hubs through a number of fascinating art exhibits hosted by Absa as part of the second annual Absa Jozi City Festival, taking place from 02 October to 05 October 2014.

Absa is the title sponsor of the festival which, as an initiative of the Joburg City Tourism Association (JCTA), celebrates the positive regeneration of the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD). There are nine official festival venues and various fringe venues spread across 11 inner-city districts. These include the Absa Campus – home to Absa Towers, incorporating the Absa Gallery and The Money Museum.

David Wingfield, Head of Marketing at Barclays Africa, said: “The City of Johannesburg has come a long way since 1997 when then South African Deputy President Thabo Mbeki announced his vision for the city centre. One need only pay the city a visit to see exactly how far we have come since then. What better way than to tell this story through art. We look forward to celebrating the city’s successes with everyone who shares our vision for a better Jozi at the festival.”

Located at Barclays Towers West in the Johannesburg CBD, The Money Museum will be open for the duration of the festival, featuring a special exhibition of never-seen-before items from the Absa archives commemorating Joburg’s rich history and heritage.

The Absa Gallery at Absa Towers North will showcase a number of exhibitions.

Re-Sampled 2014: Re-working the Still provides the public and participating artists with access to selected works from the Absa collection, with the latter using the opportunity to relook, resample and reposition the works within a contemporary South African reading. It is well established that European-influenced art production dealt with the South African socio-political landscape based on the philosophical principles of the time.

Re-Sampled 2014: Re-working the Still attempts to put forward philosophical ideals and principles from historic artworks in the Absa collection as seen through the eyes of artists Helena Hugo, Henk Serfontein, Hanneke Benade, Lala Crafford, Nompumelelo Ngoma, Andrew Sprawson, Landi Raubenheimer, Luan Nel, Nina Torr, Jaco van Schalkwyk, Pauline Gutter and Franli Meintjes.

In the second exhibition, Still Life Painting: A Historical Look, Absa offers a glimpse into its expansive art collection. Although Absa maintains the largest collection of South African art in the southern hemisphere, these works are rarely seen by the public. This exhibition offers art lovers such an opportunity in what is a must-see event on the festival programme.

Absa Towers North itself will host the photographic exhibition, Stad/City: To Let/For Sale, by Alistair McLachlan. Conceived within the context of and allied to the promotion and current rejuvenation of the Johannesburg inner city, Stad/City: To Let/For Sale bears witness to the changing face of the Johannesburg CBD between 2003 and 2012 as seen and photographed by artist in residence, Alastair McLachlan, from a single viewpoint 19 floors above Johannesburg.

Responding to the increasing interest in the rejuvenation of the city and its unique dichotomy, McLachlan sets out to create an image of the Johannesburg CBD that conveys and engages both the reality of his social context while providing a place for the world of our imagination. This alluring showcase is a preview of McLachlan’s upcoming exhibition that will be hosted at the Absa Gallery next year.

Absa Towers North will also feature The City of Gold Urban Art Festival Exhibition, curated by Grayscale Concepts, an exhibition of a number of well-known local and international graffiti artists – a theme that will be carried through to Absa Towers Main where, for the duration of the upgrade and maintenance of Towers Main, a hoarding placed around the building will act as a canvas for local graffiti artists. The hoarding will be decorated in the run-up to the festival, with the final wall being painted by the artists on the last day of the festival, 5 October 2014.

Outside of the Absa Campus, Absa will host the intriguing installation, In living memory of what Never Happened by James Webb at Newtown Junction, a previous Absa L’Atelier Art Competition winner. As part of the installation, a multi-lingual public service announcement boldly declares, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please. You are reminded that everything is fine’, from speakers in the public space. Using the existing tradition of public address systems to catch incidental audiences unawares, the piece makes people question why they are being reminded that everything is fine when they were not aware anything was out of order in the first place. The work is presented as an unadvertised and uncontextualised intervention in a public space, and uses a variety of local and international languages that are foreign to the ear of the individual audience.

This is just a taste of the arts line-up that has been secured for the four-day Absa Jozi City Festival, which will also feature theatre, ballet, kwaito, comedy, entertainment and film as well as rooftop parties, inner-city tours, street soccer and night-time cycling.

The Money Museum and the Absa Gallery will be open from 08h00 – 16h00 on Friday, 03 October and from 09h00 – 16h00 on Saturday, 04 October and Sunday, 05 October. Please remember to bring your ID along if you plan on visiting either facility.

It may be fast approaching spring, but it's going to be pure indulgent winter time inside the Häagen-Dazs super-sized snow globe from 8th to 10th August at the Melrose Arch Piazza in Joburg.

Da Vinci - The Genius Exhibition

Gauteng residents who have yet to visit the Da Vinci - The Genius exhibition now have another chance to realise this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This internationally acclaimed travelling exhibition was set to close its doors on 22 June, but organisers have bowed to public demand and extended it by a further five weeks until 27 July.

"We have been overwhelmed by the reception Da Vinci - The Genius has received in Gauteng," says Tyrone Thöle, managing director of Great World Exhibitions, the local organisers and promoters responsible for bringing the exhibition to South Africa.

"We extended the exhibition in Cape Town to meet public demand. The Johannesburg leg has been equally well-received, prompting us to give those who have yet to see it here the opportunity to do so before it leaves South Africa for good" he adds.

Da Vinci - The Genius brings to life the genius of Leonardo as an inventor, artist, scientist, anatomist, engineer, architect, sculptor and all-round Renaissance thinker.
The exhibition has been seen by over four million people around the world, including tens of thousands of South Africans.

The hundreds of exhibits on display include large touchscreen versions of Leonardo's famous codices (notebooks), life-size machine inventions, anatomical sketches, and the only 360-degree exact replica of the elusive Mona Lisa painting ever made.
Together they showcase the true depth of Leonardo's abilities and appeal to people of all ages.

The Visitor's Book is a testament to visitors' appreciation of the exhibition, with comments including, "The most incredible exhibition I have ever seen, I could stay here all day!" and "The exhibition is fascinating in every regard.
The mystery of the missing eyebrows and eyelashes of Mona Lisa are explored in the incredible photo scrutiny of this painting and you get to see it as no one else in history has ever seen it before - front and back and then layer by layer - peeling away centuries to get to the very beginning of Leonardo Da Vinci's creative process."

A number of schools have also paid a visit to the exhibition, highlighting the vast educational importance of Da Vinci - The Genius.
Two grade six to eight learners from the American International School expressed amazement at the historical relevance and interactive aspects of the exhibition, commenting, "It is amazing how inventions made in the 14 and 15 Hundreds affect the world we live in today," and "I really liked how we got to physically touch some of his inventions or prototypes. It was the best field trip this year!"
Da Vinci - The Genius is currently on at The Amazing Place in Woodmead, Sandton, and has been extended until 27 July 2014.

25 pipe bands will compete in 2 competition arenas for trophies, culminating in the grand finale, when more than 200 pipes and drums join forces

Highland Gathering
It takes a brave Scotsman to go up in a rocket ship or bungee jump in a kilt, but at the De La Salle Highland Gathering in Victory Park, anything is possible.
On Saturday, the 31st of May, the annual event will be hosted by the De La Salle Pipe Band with an unusually wide range of entertainments.

Some 25 pipe bands will compete in 2 competition arenas for trophies, culminating in the grand finale, when more than 200 pipes and drums join forces.
'Flower of Scotland' and 'Amazing Grace' will echo for kilometres around.
About 100 Scottish dancers will also fling and reel on an outdoor stage as they vie for prizes.

One new addition to the gathering is Medieval Games, in which the visiting crowds can participate.
Among the games will be "tossing the caber" - a hefty log pole-which is the Scottish equivalent of an Iron Man competition.
The adventurous may want to harness up to try going up in the inflatable rocket ship or try the Greenside Scouts obstacle course.
The Robinson Studio will also have a surprise during Massed Bands.

A tea garden and beer tent at the edge of the competition field will satisfy the crowd’s thirst, and crafts market and food stalls will offer a variety of temptations.

The Highland Gathering begins at 9 a.m. at De La Salle Holy Cross College on Road No. 3, Victory Park, and the individual bands will play throughout the day.
The massed bands will perform at approximately 4 p.m.
Entrance fees are R15 for students and R25 for adults with all funds supporting the De La Salle Pipe Band.

Fundraising jol for South African street dance legend Prince Mofokeng!

This Saturday, 22 March 2014, Fly On The Wall is hosting a fundraising jol for South African street dance legend Prince Mofokeng, who was diagnosed with an aggressive blood cancer earlier this year.

Prince was the star of Bryan Little’s multi-award-winning documentary 'The African Cypher', as well as his new short film, 'This is Prince Mofokeng'.

'The African Cypher' will be screened at The Bioscope on Friday at 6pm, with an art auction and after-party at Curiocity Backpackers.
The art auction includes work from top local creatives like Alexia Webster, Chris Saunders, Frederick Clarke, Jason Bronkhorst, Liam Lynch, MJ Turpin, and Pezul.

The screening starts at 6pm and R50 gets you in, with all funds going to Prince's cancer treatment.
The Cape Town version at the end of February raised over R40 000 for Prince, while Fly On The Wall is also running a crowdsourcing campaign so those unable to attend can still contribute.

"It feels like time has stopped," says Fly On The Wall’s Filipa Domingues.
"Prince Mofokeng, the beautiful pantsula/poet and hero of our street dance film, The African Cypher, is battling cancer.
His skills, attitude and life-story have inspired many people around the world, so we are trying to help raise funds for him to help him through this very difficult time."

Like the Facebook page 'Dancing for Prince'

"We're calling upon anyone who has seen the film or been influenced by this beautiful human being to simply post a comment or a video of yourself dancing for Prince," says Bryan.
"Put your favorite song on and dance your heart out.
Whether its weird white man wiggling, b-boying, pantsula, Sbhujwa or the lawnmower, Prince will love it."
To submit a video, upload to wetransfer.com here

Fly On The Wall has already received dance videos from Germany, Norway and Switzerland, while you can also see a number of familiar South African faces dancing for Prince.

We would like to proudly introduce, Being Frank

Being Frank is a small boutique in the heart of Johannesburg’s bustling Braamfontein district, opening its doors on the 28th of February!

We have an exciting range of ladies and men’s apparel, accessories, jewellery, selective home ware products, decor, small artworks, hand crafted cards, handmade plush toys and books.

We are passionate about products made with love and are happy to support local artists and designers in whatever way we can.

In April, Being Frank will be opening a tea kitchen in the shop.
We will be selling delicious slices of homemade cakes and pies and of course; - tea (be it iced or hot).
With a shop full of beautiful products, a wide pavement and a lovely shady tree right outside, Being Frank caters to your every comfort.

Come and celebrate the opening of Being Frank! We'll start at the store and then get our dancing shoes on for Kitcheners afterwards.

A little something from the creator of Being Frank :

"In my loneliest of days one of my only true friends was a house trained rabbit named Frank.

She inspired the name, and I suppose her unfaltering love and companionship really kept me going.

After a 6 year long career doing various things as an employee, I decided that I needed to take my destiny by the horns and become my own boss.

Being from a very creative family and having always surrounded myself with creative people, I decided my years of retail and sales experience might lend itself well in a shop that could be a creative platform for me and all of my fabulously creative contacts.

So without a second thought, I quit my corporate 9 to 5 and everything fell into place from there!

Everything in the shop is made with love, mostly by hand.
It is an assortment of personal items with character and expression."

When We Look At You!

When : Thursday 31 October 2013 to Wednesday 6 November 2013
Where : The Bag Factory, 10 Mahlatini Street, Fordsburg

Including works by : Helene Amouzou, Phineas Betha, Jacques du Toit, Norman Mudewe, Patrick Ngirandi, Grace Nichols, Andrea Rolfes and Josephine Vorster
Curators : Eileen Bezemer, Hazel Cuthbertson, Shayna Goncalves, Lisa King, Murray Kruger, Senzeni Marasela, and Susan Middleton
Twitter : @WitsCurators
E-mail : eileen.bezemer@gmail.com

Seeking to rupture the suspension of disbelief inherent in the relative 'safety' of the gallery space, the curators of the exhibition 'When We Look at You' have collapsed the facts, fictions and residues that shadow any storytelling of the historical/mythic figure.

This group exhibition by the students on the postgraduate curating programme at the Wits School of Arts examines the complexity around the history and memorialisation of Sara Baartman by addressing The Venus, which is made up of two performances by Nelisiwe Xaba - They Look at Me and That's All They Think and Sakhozi says NoN to the Venus.

Responding to these performances and the generative space of the Bag Factory, which provides studio space to artists, the students have worked collaboratively, interrogating the processual nature of their curatorial journey and attempting to resist stasis and closure.

Allowing for a multitude of experiences and interpretations avoids the creation or reinforcement of a grand narrative.

The exhibition reflects seven individual voices and each student has produced his/her own display seeking to set up a series of questions that look at the concept of interpreting history.

In this attempt to piece together the unknowable minds of Sara Baartman and Nelisiwe Xaba, the curators have explored issues of visible and invisible bodies, conceptual mapping, gender and voyeurism, definitions of place, publics and appropriation, as well as subversion and translatability.

If you spend a considerable portion of your day listening to the radio, there is a production opening this October that understands you.

Introducing the world premiere of Ghost Nowhere.

Ghost Nowhere is an original, theatrical work that focuses on the commonly neglected art of radio broadcasting.

The story takes place on the set of a talk radio station.
Though the structure is familiar, the form and content are not.

With a conventional host, an unconventional janitor and three voiceover artists imprisoned in a box, Ghost Nowhere offers a never-before-seen, satirical insight into the world of radio.

Ghost Nowhere is written and directed by Thomas Dancer and Tarryn Lee.

It promises both to entertain and inspire audiences into looking at what comes out of their radios in a totally different way.

WWF Art Auction Poised to Raise Record Funds!
23 of South Africa's most distinguished artists have offered some of their finest works for a charity art auction in support of WWF South Africa (WWF-SA) - a leading conservation NGO, which inspires people to live in harmony with nature.

The WWF Art Auction, will take place on Tuesday 17 September in Rosebank, Johannesburg.
The event is being hosted by the Everard Read Gallery's CIRCA on Jellicoe and forms part of the gallery's centenary celebrations.
With a stellar list of participating artists, the auction will be a highlight on the arts calendar for serious art collectors and is expected to raise more funds than any previous charity art auction held in South Africa.

Nicholas Oppenheimer will be the patron for the evening and Stephan Welz will conduct the auction which will also include international bidders who will link via telecon.
In addition to the support from Everard Read, Auctioneers Strauss & Co have generously agreed to conduct the auction proceedings while Nedbank continue to underline their ongoing support for WWF by joining as a co-sponsor of the event.

An abiding interest in art and conservation led to this partnership between the acclaimed gallery and this highly respected worldwide conservation organisation.
Says Dr Andrew Baxter, Head of WWF-SA's Business Development Unit, "The auction is a significant demonstration that the link between environmental and human well-being is of critical importance. Given the depth and diversity of artworks to be auctioned, it is anticipated that a significant sum of money will be raised in support of the important work undertaken by WWF South Africa."

"Fundamental shifts in human behaviour are required in order to achieve an ecological balance in which humans can live in harmony with nature. WWF South Africa is concerned with issues that include the protection of natural ecosystems - particularly those that provide critical natural resources such as fresh water. Other focus areas include sustainable fisheries (SASSI), sustainable agriculture, including the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI), emphasis on driving a low-carbon economy, land stewardship in areas of biodiversity, and establishing new populations of black rhino under the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project (BRREP)."

The difference between this and other charity art auctions is explained by Mark Read, owner of Everard Read. "Many of these artists are constantly approached by charities asking them to donate something towards a fundraising event, and because of this, the artworks donated are often not the finest representation of the artists' work. In order to ensure that we received the best work from the best artists, every artist has the opportunity to reclaim a portion of their commission (Everard Read will not receive any commission). This will guarantee that every artwork on auction will be a collectable of real importance".

Works by such luminaries as William Kentridge, Beezy Bailey, Dylan Lewis, Kerri Evans, John Meyer, Vusi Khumalo, Angus Taylor, Deborah Bell, Gary Stephens, Guy du Toit, Harold Voigt, Leigh Voight, Walter Voight, Lionel Smit, Neil Rodger, Nicola Taylor, Norman Catherine, Philemon Hlungwane Karel Nel, Rina Stutzer, Sam Nhlengethwa, and Velaphi Mzimba form the collection. These creative heavyweights are sending a strong message of their support for conservation in this line-up that will certainly attract bidders from across the country.

There is a lot of interest around the variety of works and the artists, setting the tone for a highly successful event and, with more unique and exquisite pieces available on the night, bidders have their pick of the best.

All proceeds will go towards supporting WWF-SA's conservation work, which includes maintaining and enhancing South Africa's rich natural assets, ensuring that our environments are preserved in a way that they support the economic well-being of our people, and addressing risks and opportunities of a changing environment. This mandate is enormous and in order to fulfil it, WWF-SA needs the backing of people who love and appreciate nature in all its beautiful and bountiful abundance and have the means to demonstrate that support.

A sample of the organistion's work will be documented in the WWF-SA Art Auction catalogue with a series of emotive stories told through the personal experiences of four WWF-SA staff.

The CIRCA on Jellicoe Gallery is situated at 2 Jellicoe Avenue (off Jan Smuts Avenue) in Rosebank.

The Starfish Greathearts Foundation is encouraging the public to unleash their creativity on the 20th July and make a difference one brush stroke at a time in support of Nelson Mandela Day.

The Paint For Change event will be held at St. Stithians, Sandton, with two three hours sessions starting at 9am and 1pm.

Together with Art Jamming, Starfish is calling all budding artists to come out and paint a canvas in support of Nelson Mandela Day.

The event allows people to join in solidarity by spending their 67 minutes doing something fun with family and friends while contributing to a better change for the children of South Africa.

The Starfish foundation assists in establishing and strengthening community based organisations that support children affected by HIV and AIDS in South Africa.

"We are deeply rooted in local communities and have a hands on approach, bringing life, hope and opportunity to children left orphaned or vulnerable in South Africa.
We look forward to doing our bit for children on Nelson Mandela Day" says Lorin Edgar, Fundraising Manager Starfish Greathearts Foundation.

DJ Ultramel will be spinning some funky tunes while the creative juices flow and Bos Ice Tea will see to it that budding artists are kept hydrated throughout the day.
