1 : AIRPORT SERVICE

Between Sandton Central and OR Tambo International Airport.

2 : JOHANNESBURG / PRETORIA SERVICE

Between Johannesburg (Park Station) and Pretoria (Hatfield), passing through Sandton Central and Pretoria Central Stations.

The mass rapid rail system, which gets its name from a combination of the words, Gauteng - the local province (a Sesotho word that means "Place of Gold") and train, is an 80km (50mi) service that links the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria as well as the OR Tambo International Airport.

By using one ticket, commuters can use the high speed train, parking facilities as well as the 125 luxury buses that travel the designated pick-up/drop-off routes, of up to 15kms from all stations.

These buses and specific Gautrain parking facilities, are NOT available at OR Tambo International Airport.

Travelling at speeds of up to 160 km/h (100m/h), the journey between Johannesburg's Park Station and the Pretoria's Hatfield Station takes 42 minutes, and between Sandton Central Station and OR Tambo International Airport 14 minutes.

The first journey carrying public, left Sandton Central for the OR Tambo International Airport at 05h24 on Tuesday 8th June 2010 - three days before the kick-off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

By 8th June 2011 - one year after operations began, Gautrain had carried 2.9-million passengers - a number higher than the expected target!

By comparison, New York's underground, carries 5 million passengers a day!

19 trains on the commuter system, made up of both four and eight carriages, and trains of four carriages on the airport link, service the network.

The carriages on the airport link are specially adapted to carry luggage and offer more luxurious seating.

Johannesburg's Park Station and the Pretoria Station both have direct acces to the national rail network.

Johannesburg Park Station (underground) - direct acces to the national rail network.
