Parktown North
and the Financial Mail article

Parktown North, which was proclaimed as a township in 1903, was far north of the dusty mining town of early Johannesburg at the time of its proclamation.

Gold had been discovered 17 years earlier in 1886, and this opportunity for riches, led to unprecedented growth.

Parktown North - Johannesburg's Greatest suburb!

Freehold plots in Parktown North were advertised in The Star in January 1904 and 2/3 acre or 2700m2 stands were sold at the time for 80 Pounds – an equivalent of R160 today.

105 years later, in the December 4th 2009 issue, The Financial Mail ran as its cover story, an article entitled The Great Suburbs.

The survey, which looked at the top suburbs in the major centres in South Africa, was done in conjunction with two leading South African Estate Agents, Pam Golding Properties and Seeff Properties

Johannesburg at the time had over 340 suburbs.

The result was that The Financial Mail named Parktown North as Johannesburg’s most desirable suburb – both as a place to live, and as a place to invest!
